Product description:
- Standardised extract of the flowering herb, adjusted to a minimum of 0.3% hypericin
- A herb of European tradition, reached for in times of tension for more than 2000 years
Some plants earn their place in the cupboard slowly, over centuries rather than seasons. That is exactly the tradition NOW Foods has drawn on with St. John's Wort 300 mg 100 Veg Capsules! St. John's wort (Hypericum perforatum) is a wiry perennial of European meadows, hedgerows and roadsides, and it takes its common name from the calendar: its five-petalled yellow flowers open in high summer, close to the feast day of St. John. The Latin half of the name is written into the leaf itself - hold one up against the light and you will see a scatter of pale dots that look like pinpricks, which is where perforatum comes from. They are not holes at all, but glands filled with the plant's own oils. Herbalists have gathered those flowering tops in times of strain and tension for more than 2000 years, and today modern extraction lets that knowledge travel in a convenient vegetarian capsule, as a standardised extract with a defined hypericin content.
What keeps this species under such close study is what those flowering tops carry. Hypericin is the deep red pigment held in the dark glands that fringe each petal - crush a fresh bud between your fingers and it stains the skin - and it is a light-sensitive molecule. Beside it sits hyperforin, a far more fragile compound kept in the translucent leaf glands, and the one that draws most of the attention: it acts on the way nerve cells pass signals to one another. They communicate through messenger molecules such as serotonin, dopamine and noradrenaline: one cell releases a messenger into the gap separating it from its neighbour, then usually draws it back in to be used again. Hyperforin acts on that drawing-back step - put simply, it keeps the messenger in the gap for longer. That matters, because serotonin takes part in regulating mood, appetite and the sleep rhythm, and the body also builds melatonin from it, the molecule of the daily rhythm of rest. Because the content of both swings enormously with harvest date, altitude, weather and drying, plain herb powder can differ from one batch to the next by an order of magnitude - and standardisation is the answer to exactly that: this extract is adjusted to a minimum of 0.3% hypericin, the reference figure the botanical literature is built around.
Bring one of Europe's oldest herbal traditions into your day with NOW Foods St. John's Wort!
