Melatonin is a hormone naturally produced in the body by the pineal gland. It is produced when darkness falls. This is why it is often referred to as the night hormone, or sleep hormone. As it is released into the blood, we become increasingly sleepy until we finally fall asleep. Typically, the highest concentration of melatonin occurs between midnight and three in the morning. Small amounts of melatonin are also produced by the retina and in the bone marrow and intestines (where it controls its movements). Melatonin is also used to alleviate the effects of andropause, which occurs in men after the age of 50, during which the secretion of certain hormones, including melatonin, decreases. Due to a deficiency of this and other hormones, including dehydroepiandrosterone, growth hormone, IGF-1, testosterone, they not only have sleep disorders, a tendency to depression, hot flashes, but also a decrease in sexual potency.
