Product description:
- Senna leaf, Cassia angustifolia - the desert shrub that Arab physicians already knew a thousand years ago.
- Supports bowel regularity and normal intestinal function.
- Works where it should: its sennosides stay inactive until the bacteria of the colon switch them on.
Some plants earn their reputation slowly; senna earned its in a single, unmistakable way, which is why the leaf has travelled from the desert to nearly every pharmacopoeia on Earth. With this in mind, Swanson developed Senna Leaf 500 mg 100 Capsules! Senna, Cassia angustifolia, is a low shrub with narrow, pale-green leaflets and yellow flowers that grows in the dry country of Arabia, the Horn of Africa and India; its name comes from the Arabic sanā, and it was Arab physicians of the ninth and tenth centuries who first wrote it into their medical texts, trading the dried leaf through Alexandria to the rest of the Mediterranean. Later the plant was grown on a large scale in the south of India, and the leaf sold from there became the standard. What the leaf carries are sennosides - compounds of the anthraquinone family that the plant itself keeps in a harmless, "locked" form, bound to a sugar molecule. Each capsule holds the whole dried leaf, not an isolated fraction. It comes in a small capsule that fits easily into a daily routine.
First and foremost, senna leaf supports bowel regularity and normal intestinal function - and it does so with a precision that few plants can match. The sennosides pass through the stomach and small intestine untouched, because the body has no enzyme to open them; only in the large intestine do gut bacteria strip away the sugar and release the active form, which then encourages the muscular wall of the colon to move and keeps more water in its contents. The effect therefore arrives many hours after the capsule, usually the next morning, which is why senna has always been an evening herb. It is also, by its nature, a short-term aid: the label says plainly that it is not meant for extended use, and the same tradition that valued it also knew to reach for it only when needed. In a capsule of the dried leaf, each dose is measured - the same amount every time.
